Recently reported by major media outlets, man-made chemical water contamination is “far worse than previously estimated” and may be linked to some cancers, liver damage, and other serious health concerns.
What are ‘Forever Chemicals’?
‘Forever chemicals’ man-made chemicals include PFOA, PFOS, GenX (plus many other chemicals) and are known as perfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS. These chemicals get their name for being persistent, resistant to breaking down in the environment and in our bodies.
PFAS are introduced to water in water facilities but are also most commonly found in a wide range of consumer products like:
- Packaged processed food
- Commercial household cleaning products
- Some living organisms like fish and animals
Testing US Water
In a recent study by the Environmental Working Group, tap water samples were taken from 44 sites in 31 states and only 1 reported no detectable PFAS. On average, 6 to 7 PFAS compounds were found in these samples, revealing that more often than not, the general public is exposed to contaminated water with a mixture of these chemicals. PFAS’ highest levels were recently found in Miami, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.
EWG Senior scientist, David Andrews says, “It’s nearly impossible to avoid contaminated drinking water from these chemicals.” It’s possible that even small amounts of PFAS can be detrimental to our health.
What steps can we take to feel safe about our drinking water?
It’s nearly impossible to avoid contaminated drinking water from these chemicals.
